Background
In the quest for
achieving world class supplier status of tin mill products,
becoming cost effective packaging solution provider and
also for improving the processing efficiency, productivity,
customer service, TCIL has been focusing on benchmark /
comparative data.
Defining
Benchmarking
Benchmarking is a process of continuously comparing and
measuring our own performance against the business leaders
anywhere in the world to gain information which would help
the organization take action to improve its performance.
Benchmarking is an ongoing measurement and analysis process
that compares internal practices, processes or methodologies
with those of other organizations. The purpose of these
studies is to identify " Best Practices" that may be adopted
to a wide range of organizations and provide them with quantum
process improvements, which would result in increased business
process.

or quality related processes. The ultimate aim of any organization
is to adopt Best in class technology for greater customer
satisfaction and thereby better financial result.
However, the scope
for benchmarking is not limited to above. It is much wider
in scope and also applicable in the following areas:
-
Improve Customer
Satisfaction while reducing Complaint Handling time.
-
Provide fact based
decisions – Performance Management System.
-
Achieve competitive
advantage –6Hi Mill Work Roll Thro’ put.
- Hydraulic Management System in 6 Hi Mill.
Benchmarking in TCIL
Benchmarking was
institutionalized in the year 2001 with a series of workshops
covering concepts of benchmarking, selection criteria and
systematic method of working on benchmarking projects. The
basic objective was to improve customer satisfaction, accelerate
the rate of change, identify breakthrough improvements,
provide fact based decisions and also to achieve competitive
advantage.
The concept and awareness
of benchmarking was given to the Executives, Officers and
Union Committee Members in batches from all functional areas
and has also been published in the In-house journal, Tinplate
News and Tinplate Samachar for wide awareness to the employees.
The benchmarking projects were identified on key business
processes and strategic challenges of the organization.
Benchmarks / competitive comparisons used, are for prime
yield, process cost, interest burden, delivery compliance,
new product development etc.
The BM / Comparative data and information
is used for effectively supporting operational improvements
as also for strategic decision making and innovation.
