The Eastern Region Ethics Counsellors’ Meet organized by Tata Steel, Tata Motors and Tayo Rolls at Beldih Club on December 19, 2006 was attended by the CEOs of various companies and the Ethics Counsellors of Tata Group Companies in the Eastern zone.

Inaugurated by Mr B Muthuraman, MD, Tata Steel, the session comprised an inaugural and a business session. The inaugural session targeted four issues central to the challenges in Management of Business Ethics faced by industries in general and Tata Group in particular. The panel consisted of the CEOs of TQMs, Tata Sons and Tata Services and senior business leaders.

Mr Bushen Raina, MD, TCIL and Chairman, CII (Eastern Region) elucidated on the need for Affirmative Action in the Indian Industry and also its role in the industrial circle. While explaining the Indian Government’s position and its expectation from industries, Mr Raina mentioned two challenges in the area of Business Ethics:

  • Transferring of ethical values and programmes to all stakeholders, including employees on the shop floor.
  • The impact of IT and internet technology on ethical environment.

Mr Raina stated that though CII does not favour reservation in employment, believing it would interfere with merit at workplace, it is committed to a statement of equality. In the Affirmative Action strategy that CII plans to implement, it has concentrated upon increasing employability of the targeted group, encouraging entrepreneurship skills amongst them by developing good suppliers and creating more avenues for education, such as, coaching classes and scholarship. He also threw light upon the model code of conduct that CII has developed for companies.
