TCIL observes  February  as "Gyan Vardhan Month"

KM is typically driven in an organisation mainly focused on organisational objectives such as improved performance, competitive advantage, innovation, the sharing of lessons learned, and continuous improvement of the organisation. KM efforts overlap with Organisational Learning, and may be distinguished by a greater focus on the management of knowledge as a strategic asset and focus on encouraging the exchange of knowledge.

Keeping in this mind, February, 2009 was celebrated as the Gyan Vardhan Month or could be termed as the Knowledge Enhancement Month. During this month to steer and drive KM, various event were organised. This year the month long celebration was focused on “Managing Variability”.

Quiz Competition

The KM Quiz Competition this year was held simultaneously at both Jamshedpur Works and Kolkata Office on  23rd February, 2009 . At Jamshedpur, this event was inaugurated by Mr. A.K.Ghosh, GM(Operations) / KM Process Owner and Mr. R.Appal Raju, Dy.President – GTWU. Whereas at Kolkata it was coordinated by Mr. S.Venkatraman, Chief Marketing Manager The competition received an overwhelming response as 21 teams of E, O & U level (i.e. 63 employees) participated in the “ Battle of wits” at Jamshedpur whereas there were 9 at Kolkata .

Paper Presentation

Their was an overwhelming response for the Paper presentation during the Gyan Vardhan Month. Thirteen papers were presented on 25th February, 2009 in the General Office Auditorium, Jamshedpur across all functions,  which were either success stories with a systematic approach to problem solving or Dare to try attempts. However ,the learnings from failures proved to be an intangible asset for the organization. Papers also encompassed new ideas where participants came up with revolutionary concepts ranging from  Value Innovation to recovery of wastages which would directly impact the bottom-line of the organization.

The Jury comprising of GM(HRM), GM(O) and COO were kind enough to evaluate the presentations made and adjudge the category winners amongst Executives, Officers and Associates.

Kaizen (at workplace)

Their was an overwhelming response for the Kaizen Competition ( at Workplace) during the Month. More than 40 kaizens were inspected across various units in the Works premises on the 24th of February, 2009. The level of commitment towards small time improvements which focused on overall improvement adopting the PQCDSM Model ( Productivity, Quality, Cost, Delivery, Safety & Morale) was truly exemplary.

The jury comprising of Mr. P.K.Bandopadhyaya, DM(E&E) ETP and Mr. Chanchal Kumar, Manager (M/M) CRM finally selected Six Best Kaizens.

Knowledge Piece Uploaded

Knowledge Pieces which have been uploaded have been religiously scrutinised  by the Jury Members based on the theme for this month long celebration i.e. " Managing Variability". Out of about 75 knowledge pieces posted on the KM Site , 55 knowledge pieces have been uploaded ( as on 27.2.2009). Most of the knowledge pieces were either on knowing a system or process, safety tips, knowledge literature etc.

Simultaneously there have also been KPs which speaks on the Standard Operating Practices or on future alternatives and are of relevance to the organisation .

The highlight of the month has been the various Gyan Vardhan Sessions ( i.e. Internal KM Sessions) facilitated by CIG. The topics for these sessions were on issues which are crucial to the organization and discussed measures to be taken to enhance the productivity, quality, cost, delivery, safety and morale. These sessions were not only conducted by unit heads with their down the line  associates , but also by GM(Operations), COO, CDM(QA & TG) , CDM(Business Excellence) and others from the Sr. Leadership Team. 29 such sessions have been organized across the Works like Customer Centricity, Consumer Research done by TCIL, Polymer usage, Product Development (DR 07/08/09), Effect of Anode Practice on Tinplate surface Quality, Tinplate Processes, latest development of new Tinplate processes / additional features in ETL-2 with respect to ETL-1 etc.
