TPM Launched in TCIL
TPM is an unique
Japanese system of managerial expertise. This concept was introduced in the year 1971
based on preventive maintenance concept learnt by the Japanese from United States. TPM
gradually became recognized during the decades of 1970's & 1980's by the virtue of its
remarkable achievements. Japan learnt a great deal through 1950's and 1960's the concept
of preventive maintenance from US which included Productive, Maintenance, Corrective
Maintenance, Maintenance Prevention, Reliability Engineering & Maintainability
Engineering. After 1970 the American idea of PM spread so widely in JAPAN that PM was
thought to be an acronym for Plant Maintenance. Eventually PM was developed with a unique
Japanese perspective and was tailored to the Japanese style of management. TPM had its
inception at Nippon denso Co. Ltd. a well known general manufacturer of automotive parts
in the year 1961 Nippon denso Co. Ltd. was the first Japanese company to receive award for
PM excellence in the in the year 1971. TPM now permeates through entire company structure,
through every lineof business and all parts of the world. This has become evident by the
sharp increase of business establishments receiving PM awards based on TPM. Presently
there have been a shift from production sector TPM to company wide TPM and growing number
of countries where TPM is practiced. The number of companies, who are adopting TPM, is
growing each day. Till the year 1996 Six Hundred and Ninety Three companies have received
TPM excellence award for various categories, all over the world. The numbers of award
winning companies have crossed thousand by the year 2002.
TCIL is competing
with globally renowned Tinplate producers. Threat from alternating packaging material
coupled with increasing convenience features is a strategic challenge for TCIL. Therefore
developing cost effective innovative packaging solutions, offering convenience features is
of strategic importance. TCIL has been able to increase its overall market share from 18%
in 1997-98 to +35% in 2002-03 by continuously focusing on various quality improvement
techniques. These initiatives are directed towards business excellence. The recent
initiative adopted by the company is Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) which is a proven
technique for improving Productivity, Quality and Cost. This initiative involves top
management down to front line staffs. Small group activities under JH Pillar of this
initiative impart tremendous self motivation in the employees. This initiative was started
in the later part of year 2001-02 in a small manner (Two Manager Model Machines) with the
help of JIPM consultant. Focused work on these Manager Model Machines brought immense
benefit to the company. JIPM consultant Mr. T. Watanabe is visiting TCIL every alternate
month to review the progress and provide guidelines. Following the TPM methodology, seven
pillars have been created who are working with time bound action plan for TPM
implementation. Senior level teams have assumed the responsibility under various pillars
(Jishu-Hozen, Planned Maintenance, Kobestu-Kaizen, Education and Training Safety Health
& Environment, Hinshitsu-Hozen and Administration). All sixteen losses have been
mapped and loss structure have been prepared and displayed in the various units of CRM and
ETP. Focused project groups (KK Project Team and JH TPM circles - seven operator models)
are working in CRM and ETP to improve the overall equipment effectiveness.Regular visit of
JIPM consultant Mr. T. Watanabe has improved the 5S (Good House Keeping) standard within
the plant. This initiative has resulted into self inspection of various equipment
resulting into reduction in down time. Checklist have been developed and implemented for
all critical equipments.
Full horizontal deployment of this initiative
commenced after the formal Kick-Off ceremony held on 5th May 2003. The programme was
jointly inaugurated by Mr.Bushan Raina, Managing Director,Tinplate Company and JIPM
consultant Mr.T.Vatanabe,. The guests were welcomed by Lokesh Verma.Addressing the
gathering Mr.T K Ghosh, GM (Works) informed about the history of TPM. Mr.Raina added that
this day was a mile stone in the history of TCIL, as it has adopted TPM, which would not
only increase the production but also the quality of the goods produced. Mr. T.Vatanabe
said that after the implementation of TPM the company would touch new heights in the field
of production and quality of the products. This concept is totally related to human
thoughts on how to enhance the quantity without compromising on quality. |
