Over the last few decades, Value Engineering, a technique originally developed and perfected in the US, has been established as a practical, useful and potent tool for cost improvement in most industries all over the world. Its applications have reached a very wide range of subjects including hospital administration and environmental control. TCIL, following a systematic and organized approach, has well adapted this VE technique through its top management's support and commitment to cost improvement programmes.

The VE Process in Tinplate Company Of India Limited

The VE process in Tinplate is a planned effort directed at analyzing the functions of products, processes, services and systems for the purpose of satisfying the required functions at the lowest total cost without sacrificing, quality, performance, delivery, maintainability, environment and safety. In actual practice, the VE process consists of a series of steps, which helps in identifying the unnecessary costs and minimizing them, if not eliminating them altogether. Our own experience clearly shows that success results from rigid adherence to the Job Plan. Although several versions are in common use with slight variations, we, in TCIL, follow an Eight-Phase Job Plan.

Stage 1 Orientation Phase
Stage 2 Information Phase
Stage 3 Function Phase
Stage 4 Creation Phase
Stage 5 Evaluation Phase
Stage 6 Recommendation Phase
Stage 7 Implementation Phase
Stage 8 Audit Phase
